Scrap Vehicle Acceptance Policies

What We Buy and What We Don't

Dear Valued Customer,
As you know, Southern Metals Recycling is committed to the protection of the environment, compliance with all scrap recycling laws and regulations and above all the safety of our customers, employees and community. As part of this ongoing effort we want to share with you the most up-to-date information on maintaining safe loads and material prior to pick-up or delivery to our facility. Below is our Source Control information. This will help you identify those materials that we can safely and efficiently recycle and those that we cannot. With your help, we can ensure that this is a safer, cleaner, more profitable experience for all parties. Please review the outline and feel free to ask any questions you might have. ITEM AND MATERIAL ACCEPTANCE

The purpose of this outline is to stress our continuing commitment to safe, environmentally responsible recycling. Our commitment is intended to protect you, our supplier, as well as ourselves and other customers visiting our facility. We want you to feel assured that when you send your recyclable materials to us they will be handled in a safe, environmentally responsible manner.

The materials that we will NOT ACCEPT are:
  • Materials containing asbestos
  • PCB containing or PCB contaminated transformers, capacitors, light ballasts, or other equipment or containers
  • Sealed containers (Freon cans, airbag canisters, etc. unless they have been cut in half)
  • Acetylene or oxygen tanks.(unless cut in half)
  • Aerosol cans or cans containing paint
  • Flammable materials
  • Materials containing excess or free flowing oil, gasoline, diesel fuel or other hydrocarbons
  • Radioactive materials
  • Garbage, trash, or excessive quantities of dirt, concrete, or other non-metallic materials, .drums, tanks, or other containers that may have residues in them. These items must be “clean & dry”. (They must be completely cleaned in accordance with applicable laws and with our prior approval)
  • Burned Copper Wire
  • Fuel tanks of any type without a Decontamination Certificate and 36” holes cut in both ends of the tank. Tanks must be clean & dry
  • Drums must be triple rinsed. Top must be open. (A decontamination certificate must be provided.)
  • Transformers unless the proper paperwork is provided in accordance with our corporate policies. Prior approval is required
  • Safes
We will ACCEPT the following items:
  • White goods. (Stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, freezers, etc.)
  • Air conditioning units. (Freon and capacitors must be removed).
  • Freon Cans with removed nozzles
    • **Sellers certify that all refrigerant including, but not limited to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HCFCs), as defined in Section 608 of the Clean Air Act and 40 CFR 82 that has not leaked previously will be recovered from all appliances to be delivered for sale prior to delivery.
    • Seller also agrees to indemnify and hold Southern Metals recycling harmless from any claim, penalty, fine, fee, cost, attorneys’ fees, or other liability resulting whole or in part from the seller’s breach of these guidelines.
  • Automobile shocks and struts.
  • Automobile motors with the fluids removed.
  • Transmissions with the fluids removed.
  • Torque converters
  • Hydraulic cylinders
  • Automobiles: Contact us regarding purchasing your vehicle.
  • Lead acid batteries (if in quantity, they should be prepared per DOT standards.)
  • Vehicle rims
  • Tin food cans
  • Propane tanks must be cut in half from top to bottom. No exceptions.
  • Fence wire, Steel Cable and other types of loose steel wire at a REDUCED VALUE.
  • Microwave Ovens (capacitors must be removed).
  • Cast iron pipe with leaded joints.
  • Counter weights.
  • Air cylinders must have a hole in them or are disassembled. Hydraulic tanks must have large holes cut in them and be “clean & dry”.
  • Any items containing Lithium-Ion batteries are to be segregated from the general waste stream prior to pick-up.
